As part of the City’s of Cockburn's commitment to sustainable development we have created this website for your information, as a guide to help you build the most sustainable house you can.
If you're building, the principles displayed throughout this site can be taken to your architect and builder and incorporated into the plans for your house. If you are renovating, many of the principles still apply - there is a lot that can be done to make an existing house more sustainable.
It is estimated that Australia’s seven million households produce over 105 million tonnes of greenhouse gas (CO2 equivalent) each year. This contributes to over 20% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions. By building a home which incorporates sustainable design principles, you will not only be actively contributing to greenhouse gas reduction, you could also be saving hundreds of dollars every year.
Please take the time to explore this site - and the ideas contained within it. As well as sustainable design there is information on council regulations and local businesses whose products and services could help you to build or retrofit your home for sustainability.
